Homecare Champions Exemplify Excellence

Each year the HME community recognizes a professional in the industry who has made an exceptional contribution to the homecare sector throughout their career, as exemplified by:

  1. Longstanding record of service within the homecare community;
  2. Embodiment of the spirit of caring and generosity which are the hallmarks of this profession;
  3. Active membership and engagement in the American Association for Homecare. 

This award honors individuals with an outstanding record of accomplishment or leadership in various aspects of the business of HME and the care that is an essential component of it. The Homecare Champion award was renamed in 2016 in honor of VGM founder Van Miller, a visionary leader for the HME community who embodied the characteristics of this award.

Nomination Deadline

Nominations for 2026 Homecare Champion are due to Sue Mairena, suem@aahomecare.org, by January 23, 2026 at 5:00 PM. We encourage you to submit a nomination below and recognize a colleague who exemplifies the characteristics of this award.

The individuals listed below were nominated by their peers in the industry for exemplifying the qualities and spirit of a true Homecare Champion. This is a synopsis of the incredible descriptions of the work and contributions for each of these nominees. The Homecare Champion will be announced and recognized at the AAH Update at Medtrade on March 3 at 2:15 in Balroom C/D.

  • Beth Bowen, Executive Director of ACMESA

    Beth has been an unwavering champion of the HME industry for decades, providing dedicated and exemplary service to ACMESA and its members. She has been the driving force behind ACMESA/NCAMES for 30+ years, guiding the expansion of NCAMES into what is now ACMESA, encompassing North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Georgia, and Tennessee. States that once struggled to sustain independent associations have joined forces to become a stronger, more unified organization because of her leadership. She has worked tirelessly to facilitate organization and advocacy efforts along the entire east coast and consistently goes above and beyond to keep providers actively engaged with local, state, and federal policymakers. By working closely with AAHomecare and VGM, she delivers outstanding semi-annual meetings that emphasize education, advancing technology, and political advocacy to protect our industry and the patients we serve. Proven, reliable, and highly respected, her energy, connections, and leadership have enabled meaningful and lasting successes across all member states. 
  • Sandra Canally, RN, Founder and CEO of the Compliance Team

    Sandra has been at the helm of the industry supporting providers, improving patient care, and greatly impacting homecare through education and consistent leadership. As a clinical educator and CEO, she has moved the industry forward and created significant value. Leading a nationally recognized, CMS-approved, first certified woman-owned, nurse-led Accreditation Organization serving all fifty states, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands, she established the highly respected Exemplary Provider® brand, a distinction of quality, safety, and caring. She is the architect of over thirty accreditation and certification programs that provide a pathway to efficiency and excellence, empowering providers to deliver quality clinical services and improved patient care. Her industry-leading accreditation model introduced healthcare’s first comprehensive set of plain-language, operations-based quality standards, transforming the industry and establishing a new paradigm and benchmark. Guided by the belief that every patient deserves exemplary care, her longevity, leadership, and commitment have made lasting contributions and a positive industry-wide impact.

  • Bill Fredericks, CEO of Allcare Medical Supply

    Bill truly embodies what it means to be a “Homecare Champion,” consistently putting patients first while strengthening the entire homecare community. He views every shipment as more than a transaction, seeing the person on the other end who needs dignity, reliability, and continuity of care in their own home. That mindset shows in the standards he sets, the urgency he brings to solving problems, and his commitment to doing the right thing even when it’s hard. He leads with uncommon integrity and empathy, staying deeply engaged in service quality, responsiveness, clinical appropriateness, and the patient experience while running a best-in-class organization.   • Tony Greco, Senior Consultant, Sales for Cardinal Health at-Home

    Tony delivers exceptional leadership to home medical equipment providers and has made a lifelong commitment to the HME sector over four decades, embodying the mission of improving the lives of people every day. He has built a reputation as a trusted leader who seeks to understand impending legislation, educates others, and actively mentors, trains, and coaches colleagues. Described as a trusted partner, an invaluable resource, and the HME Sales “go-to” expert, he works tirelessly to ensure customer needs are met, orders deliver accurately and timely, and collaboration remains seamless and effective. His authenticity, dedication, and unwavering loyalty shine through in every interaction. He refines processes for managing critical discharge patients and ensures they receive supplies timely as they transition to home care. Beyond his professional role, he volunteers with local organizations and engages in the American Association for Homecare’s Medical Supplies Council and Incontinence Work Group, helping shape policies and strategies that drive the industry forward.

  • Derek Lampert, CEO of Drive Medical

    Derek is recognized for outstanding leadership, dedication, and a lasting impact on the home medical equipment industry and the patients it serves. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated an exceptional record of accomplishment across multiple aspects of the homecare business, consistently balancing operational excellence with a deep commitment to patient-centered care. His efforts have contributed to higher standards of care, stronger organizations, and better experiences for patients and caregivers. His sustained commitment to excellence and patient care has made a meaningful and lasting difference.

  • Pam Pacht, Strategist, Market Access for Nestle Health Science

    Pam has dedicated over 30 years of service focused on improving access to and coverage for home enteral nutrition. Throughout her distinguished career, she has demonstrated unwavering commitment to advancing patient care and supporting the home medical equipment and durable medical equipment community. She actively contributes through roles on the AAHomecare Medical Supplies Council, the Enteral Work Group, the ASPEN Public Policy Committee, and the Healthcare Nutrition Council, ensuring the voice of patients and providers is heard at every level. Her advocacy includes frequent legislative visits to Capitol Hill, where she champions policies that protect and enhance access to home enteral nutrition nationwide. As a coauthor of the multi-stakeholder Enteral Nutrition White Paper spearheaded by AAHomecare, she informs policy and reimbursement strategies and serves as a vital liaison between industry stakeholders and manufacturers. Her leadership, collaborative approach, passion, knowledge, and relentless advocacy have been instrumental in driving key initiatives that shape the future of the enteral nutrition market, making her an outstanding candidate for this award.

  • John Quinlan, Owner/President, Quinlan’s Pharmacy and Medical Equipment

    John is an obvious choice to receive the Homecare Champion Award because he is and has been a champion of this industry each and every day for decades. From being the President of NEMEP, to the chair of AAHomecare's State Leader’s Council, being the President of Quinlan's Pharmacy, being on multiple other boards in this industry and fighting every day for the good and future of the HME industry, to taking care of patients throughout the northeast, to providing help to other HME providers. John walks the Homecare Champion walk. His positive, never say give up attitude is a source of light in these challenging times.

  • Donald Reid, CEO of Total Medical Supply

    Donald exemplifies what it means to put patients, people, and communities first while building one of the most innovative and successful homecare organizations in the country. A proven healthcare entrepreneur, he has built multiple successful healthcare businesses, including the largest family-owned supplier of continuous glucose monitors in the United States. Under his leadership, the organization has grown into a national operation employing more than 200 people and serving more than 50,000 patients, all while never losing sight of the human side of healthcare. His leadership philosophy—patients over profits—is an operating standard that empowers employees to do what is right for patients. He is a strong and effective advocate for patient access, taking immediate action when policy shifts threatened continuity of care and helping restore patient choice. He has built a true family environment grounded in loyalty, integrity, and mutual respect, and his commitment to service extends into the community through support for at-risk children and families.

  • Brittany Thompson, Contracting Manager and Billing Specialist for KidMed

    Brittany demonstrates continued advocacy, leadership, and commitment to improving access to medically necessary homecare services, particularly for pediatric and vulnerable populations. She has consistently gone beyond routine operational responsibilities to champion patient access, provider integrity, and system accountability. By navigating complex Medicaid and managed care environments, challenging closed networks, inadequate reimbursement structures, and administrative barriers, she ensures members receive the care they are entitled to under EPSDT and Medicaid guidelines. A significant focus of her work is advocating for children who rely on incontinence, urological, ostomy, nutritional, and other medically necessary supplies—services essential to dignity, health, and family stability. She has dedicated countless hours to contracting efforts, policy interpretation, complaint filings, and payer education to address systemic failures. She builds sustainable, compliant, patient?centered processes that reduce denials, prevent delays, and ensure continuity of care. With persistence, professionalism, and a deep sense of responsibility, she speaks up when systems fail patients and advocates for fair policies, ethical practices, and equitable access.

2025 Homecare Champion - Rose Schafhauser

Rose Schafhauser has been named the 2025 Van Miller Homecare Champion! Please join us in congratulating Rose on this well-deserved recognition in the industry.
