Accreditation is a process required by CMS through which suppliers of DMEPOS products and services demonstrate compliance with CMS’s operational, safety, and patient care requirements and quality standards. It is a required step in obtaining and retaining a Medicare number (PTAN), which allows suppliers to bill Medicare for DMEPOS products and services. Without accreditation, suppliers cannot enroll in Medicare or legally provide DMEPOS products and services for reimbursement by Medicare. HQAA provides accreditation for DMEPOS providers, as well as Pharmacies offering DMEPOS products and services.
