Fox: Ostomy supplies aren't one-size-fits-all
Commentary by Debi Fox, The Journal Record, October 6, 2026
In a recent The Journal Record commentary, ostomate and healthcare professional Debi Fox raises concerns about including ostomy supplies in Medicare’s Competitive Bidding Program.
Fox emphasizes that ostomy supplies are highly individualized and should not be treated as interchangeable products. She explains that differences in adhesives, pouching systems, accessories, body shape, skin condition, and lifestyle can all affect whether a product works safely and effectively for a patient.
The commentary also highlights concerns that lower priced products could lead to poor fit, leaks, skin damage, infections, emergency care, and hospitalizations if patients lose access to the supplies that best meet their needs.
Drawing on her experience as both a patient and an ostomy support specialist, Fox argues that efforts to address fraud, waste, and abuse should not come at the expense of clinically appropriate product access, patient independence, and quality of life.
