One in a Million: CMS Must Protect Access to Ostomy Supplies

Nearly one million Americans live with an ostomy, relying on individualized pouching systems that protect their health and allow them to live independently. Mantell raises concerns about CMS' proposal to include ostomy supplies in Medicare's Competitive Bidding Program, warning that awarding contracts based primarily on the lowest price could limit patient access to the products that best meet their medical needs.
Drawing from her own experience after more than 20 abdominal surgeries, Mantell argues that ostomy supplies are not interchangeable and that restricting access could lead to serious health complications, reduced quality of life, and loss of independence for Medicare beneficiaries.
